Onitsha Flood: 8 years old swept away

Flash flood has wreaked havoc in the commercial hub of the South East geopolitical zone, Onitsha, killing an eight year old girl and sweeping away property of residents worth millions of Naira.
Worst hit was Egerton street area following the powerful rain storm that hammered the city ceaselessly for hours.
The body of the eight-year old girl (names withheld) was recovered in a drainage channel along old market road early the following Saturday morning when the flood had receded.
The deceased, first child of the family, was said to be  a primary four pupil of Holy Child Primary school Onitsha.
According to her mother, Mrs Amaka Nwanedo, the little girl was returning home from church after the heavy rain when the incident occurred. She confirmed they hail from Umuezike in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo state.
She stated, “…she was on her way back home from a Block Rosary Centre at Benjamin’s lane after a heavy down pour when her slippers slipped off her legs and fell into the flooded drainage”.
“In an attempt to retrieve the slippers, she was swept off by the flood”.
She said that even efforts by passersby to rescue her failed. That her lifeless body her was later found after a long search. She has since been taken home to Imo state for burial.
