48 hours after the the brazen prison break from the Minna Medium Security Prison that led to the loss of two lives – a prison staff and a motorcyclist – only 35, representing 17% of 210 escapees, have been recaptured, according to Interior Minister, General Abdulrahman Dambazzau.
On a visit on Monday, the minister admitted security lapses in the prison, a subtle indication of disciplinary measures against those who allowed these.
He also took a macro-view admitting other
“security gaps to be addressed in the prisons such as manpower, decongestion amongst others.”
Dambazzau also announced that the Federal Government is building a 3000-capacity prison in each of the six geopolitical zones and take on 6000 fresh hands.
On the visit, host State Governor,
Sani-Bello appealled to public servants to take their jobs seriously. “Niger State Government will collaborate with the Federal Government to improve infrastructure of prisons across the state.”
