Rivers poll: Wike leads as INEC collates results from 21 LGAs

Must read

With 21 local government areas announced, Governor Nyesom Wike looks good to be announced the winner of the Rivers State Governorship election following results from the ongoing collation exercise.
There is already a margin of 600,000 votes which makes re-run in two outstanding Local Government Areas (LGAs) unnecessary. However, it is left for the IndependentNational Electoral commission (INEC) to decide.
Wike’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had scored 763,603 when votes from 19 LGAs were counted. The All Progressives Congress (APC) backed AAC has scored 162, 180.
Even with the result, the PDP is raising an alarm of a plot by the APC to allegedly disrupt the on-going final collation of the results.
The PDP alleged in a statement:  “Our party has been informed that the APC has been mounting pressure on security agencies to withdraw their personnel from the collation center and open the way for the invasion of armed hoodlums, sponsored by the APC, to invade the center and disrupt the exercise.
“The PDP has full information of how the APC plots to scuttle the collation, render the process inconclusive and trigger a constitution crisis in the state.”
It called on the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to immediately direct adequate security at the collation center and ensure that the process is concluded and Governor Wike declared winner according to the wishes of majority of the people of Rivers State.
On Wednesday INEC resumed collation of results of the March 9 governorship election in Rivers State. A total of 19 LGAs have so far been collated as at Wednesday morning.
Elections did not hold in Khana and Abual/Odual LGAs which will be outstanding to complete the 23 LGAs in the state. If INEC decides to hold elections there, it is unlikely to change the total picture of the votes.
