It was firewood they went fetching, but unfortunately they picked an explosive device that killed seven of them on Monday. Painfully, four of the children had one mother.
This is the tragedy that befell residents of Magami village in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State, according to the Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs Abubakar Dauran on Tuesday.
The mother of the four children said they had gone to fetch water earlier in the day before proceeding to fetch wood for cooking. The children were said to be playing with the object when it exploded and killing six on the spot.
A seventh died in the hospital, while other injured children are said to be receiving treatment in a hospital in Gusau, the state capital.
rysaid the victims went to the bush in search of firewood when they picked an explosive devise and began playing with it, and shortly after, it exploded.
Zamfara, in the recent past, has been a base for bandits, and the military has been having a running battle with them, even as the state government has been involved in delicate negotiations to disarm the bandits.
