Tension in Abuja over viral message of planned Shi’ites’ protest

Must read

For days, the message of a planned protest of Shi’ites, also known as Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) has been on many social media platforms, raising tension in the Federal Capital City of Abuja.

The alleged protest as the message goes is planned to hold this Friday at the National Mosque, the popular Unity Fountain beside the Transcorp Hilton Hotel and other unnamed parts of the city.

Residents have been cautioned to avoid those parts of the city as security forces maintain a disquieting silence over the message.

The source of what appeared to be an internal memo is not known, but it has raised fears in the mind of residents who have often seen how clashes between the Shi’ites and government forces always turn bloody.

The last one around the Eagle Square two weeks ago was said to have claimed a life. The IML has been pushing for the release of its leader, Yakubu el-ZakZakky, and his wife, who have been in detention and on trial.
