Akpabio beats Yari to become Senate President, Barau returned unopposed as deputy

Must read

After hours of negotiations and horse-trading, former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Minister of Niger Delta Development and Senator representing Akwa Ibom South-West District, Godswill Akpabio, has emerged the new Senate President.

He defeated former Zamfara State Governor and Zamfara West Senatorial District, Senator-elect Abdul’aziz Yari.

Senator-elect Jibrin Barau from Kano State was elected unopposed at exactly 10.00 a.m. His swearing-in was on as of press time.

In the House of Representatives, voting was still on, though Representative Tajudeen Abbas appeared to be leading.

Akpabio had met behind closed doors meeting with former Senate Majority Whip, Senators Orji Kalu and Osita Izunaso, from the South-East geopolitical zone, who showed interest in the exalted office, but appeared to have stepped down for Akpabio.

Akpabio polled 63 votes to defeat Yari 46.
